My engine started immediately today! Probably between
first and second blades! It also ran very smoothly. Thank God and
thank you, Tracy!
Congrats. I'm sure
you deserve quite a bit of the credit :-)
My first thought when
reading this was a bad electrical connection, as others have mentioned. Do
check that, but...
I am going to try and move the starter a little in the mount on
Tracy's drive to provide a little relief in case it is binding. I do
not know if this is possible...(how much slop is in the starter hole on the
drive)
I had to do this very thing on either
the RV-3, or the single rotor engine (can't remember
which). I do recall the bendix gear not retracting, and I even
believe I recall that it wouldn't turn. If the fit of the gear is so
tight that it won't let the gear move all the way forward, I believe that also
prevents the high current contacts inside the solenoid from connecting the
motor to 12V.
If I were to continue guessing, I'd say
it might even work tomorrow, when it's cool. The warm
gears might have expanded just enough to keep them from engaging as far as
they did when they were cold.
All in all, sounds like you had a great
first run!
Rusty
