my RV-6A has a suzuki samaria nippon-denso alternator.  it spins at
6-8000rpm at cruise.  it has 950 hrs. on it, all flawless.  it cost $75
used.  i never bothered to do the external regulator thing.  I find this
impressive, especially hearing how much alternator problems certified planes
seem to have.
