I used a NPT tap - it was either 3/8 or 1/2" dia  (its been over a decade).
I simply tapped it for a threaded aluminum hex nut plug of that diameter and
screwed it in tightly and its still there after over 10 year of running.

Not bad Ed.  I'll give you full credit in consideration for your aging brain :-)
 
BTW, a good log and search engine makes up for that.  Imagine how I know this :-)

Tapped the bypass hole in the water pump housing with a ½” NPT tap.  This worked pretty darned well.  Installed an aluminum ½” pipe plug, with just a bit of high temp RTV on the threads.
 
Rusty (DAR inspection scheduled for the 11th, first flight maybe the 12th)
