quick question!  why would it fire occasionaly in the worng spot any idea what would cause that?

Beats me, Tony, but the good news is with the coil wires spaced apart, I was able to get a better timing reading.  I had it a little fast-retarded it to 35 degrees BTDC and it purrs like a kitten now.  With no prop, it will idle as low as 800 RPM, and smoooothe. Whew!
