Hi Rusty, I arrived at the same
conclusion regarding the propulsion of a gyro copter about 20 years ago. The
results of my efforts were a single seat gyro with a KAWA 440 engine driving a
ducted fan(not a shrouded propeller).
Now that's just way too cool Richard
:-)
Was the fan running directly off the engine, with no
redrive? Did you feel that the performance was better than it would have
been with a traditional redrive and prop? If I get serious about
trying this, I'll certainly take you up on your offer to share
info.
Since I haven't been able to come up with the perfect "next
project" for the single rotor, I'm thinking about buying one of those cheap
(less than $200) Harbor Freight trailers, and setting it up as a mobile engine
stand. That will let me work on it at home, then hook it to the truck to
take it to the airport to run. Until I come up with a redrive,
or ducted fan that works, there's really no point in putting it on an aircraft
of any type, since the mounting will likely change with any change to the
drive. I've also got an Ellison EFS-4 to test in
comparison to the EC-2.
I think my wife is hoping I'll get my
kicks tinkering with the engine, and won't actually build another
aircraft. Silly woman :-)
Cheers,
Rusty
