Wouldn't take much pressure differential at all to get 1/2" variance. Maybe try capping the ends of the tubes and drilling static ports around the side? 2) I used 1/4" tubing as a water level myself. With a garden hose, maybe you've got so much water in there that it has its own tidal effects. 3) 1/2"!!
