For just a shield, if simple stainless/AL radiant barrier is inadequate, what about Fiberfax (sp?) used by some as a heat barrier on firewalls?

Metal heat shield works fine, but still gets hot and transfers lots of heat to everything around. Ceramic is a very good heat insulator (space shuttle). That's why they line the inside of kilns with ceramic blocks. When on the inside they could be red hot for hours, you can put your hand on the outside. I'm already thinking how to make heat shield from this material.
