While looking at the K&N filters on Summit I noticed that they have:
Filter Bypass Relief Valve: Yes
Relief Valve Open (psi): 8-11 psi
Does this mean that the filter is bypassed when the oil pressure goes
over 8-11 psi?  If so, that would be the same as no filter in the
rotary????

Not so fast there..

The relief valve is a relative thing. When the change in pressure across the filter exceeds the stated value, then the relief valve function is actuated. Simply pumping it in at 100 or so PSI is not the key to the issue.. having the filter clogged enough such that the pressure drop across the element gets too great IS the key to the issue.
