Subject: shut-off valve at tank

I bought a couple shutoff valves at Sun'n'Fun this year, with the intention of using them at the tank in front of the supply lines to make maintenance easier.  What I'm wondering now is how do I get air into the line once I turn the valves off.  The line won't drain if air can't get in there.  Is the only option to crack open the fitting after the valve?
