What do other rotary flyers consider max EGT, and what could be causing
it to be so high (if this is really high)?

Good to hear that you're putting some fairly trouble free time on the engine now.  As for the EGT's, mine used to always be high as well.  The EM-2 came with 1750 as the default temp alarm, and I tripped that on every departure.  I finally raised it to 1800 after talking to Tracy, who had done the same thing.  Still, I had to go extra rich on takeoff to keep from tripping it. 
 
In WOT cruise, you could certainly set the mixture in such a way to trip it as well, but it wasn't really any problem when you leaned for a reasonable fuel burn.  I'd be interested to hear of anyone flying who can't hit these temps routinely.
