That's really the only way to go, if you are not comfortable flying in the bird you build because of something you did/didn't do then its pretty much a wasted effort, so taking the time to do it to meet your personal criteria is the only way to go. Looking back on when I first started my project, the only thing FWF components that are still there that was there on my first flight is the exhaust headers and the motor mount {:>). Well, the ignition and fuel system is unchanged (so far) But, then I do experiment a bit.
