   Yes Molt did and I happen to have one here from the aerocar, I got it when I bought the molds for the Coot from him and cleaned out his shop.
  It weighs in at 28 lbs, a bit heavy and complicated and I think a 28 lb flywheel would do it.

Didn't Mott Taylor develop a clutch system that that used waffled disk and steel shot to transfer torque with out transmitting the pulses to the prop?  I think I remember him demonstrating it at Oshkosh back in 81, but  I've sleep several places since then.}:>).  You might be able to adapt something like that to drive the RD-1.
