Re: [FlyRotary] Fw: [FlyRotary] Re: Dodge vs
Ford
The tooth count for the dodge
is 62 on ring 28 on the sun and 17 on the planets.
Comparing the C-6 gears that are
used in the 2.17 and 3.17 ratio to the Dodge 3.21 ratio the Dodge
gears have much bigger teeth, the sun gears are the same outside
diameter but the C-6 has teeth and the Dodge has 28 teeth, this is do
to the larger teeth on the Dodge.
Also the ring gears have the same
inside diameter but the C-6 has 74 teeth and the dodge has 62 teeth do
to the larger teeth on the Dodge.
The surface speed remains about the
same but the teeth are bigger, sounds stronger to me.
I have built off road race car
transmissions for years and although manual not stick and always the
gears with bigger teeth were always stronger.
Another thing that I noticed when I
was looking at gears at the tranny shop is that the C-6 set that gives
2.85 ratio has a bigger sun gear and the planet gears were real small
do to the larger sun gear so that would raise the planet gear
rpm.
Here is a shot of both gears side by
side, its clear to see the difference.
Ken Welter
Ken,
Some
additional info!
I look at
the planetary as I look at a external toothed gear engaged to a drive
gear.
The smaller drive gear has to travel ( with the
E4D) 2.85 times further than the larger gear ( the larger
gear has 2.85 times additional teeth).
The
planetary gears ( in my mind ) merely transfers the loads. Their not
involved with varying the Ratio!
No matter
how it's used in a Vehicle/ Truck, we will use it the same as we
use the other planetaries, so the assessment is the same as the other
planetaries.
So I'm
figuring that the ring gear must be about 84 for the ring gear and
about 38 for the sun gear e.g. 84/ 38 = 2.21 +1
=3.21
If you can
give me the tooth count we can evaluate from there - no pressure
and no confusion.

Ken,
The ratio is
ring gear tooth (numbers) divided by sun gear teeth(
numbers).
If
drive is taken out of the planet (turning RH) = A divided by B =
2.21+ 1 = 3.21
If drive is
taken out of the ring gear ( turning LH) = A divided by B
= 3.21
EG the E4D
is 78 toothed Ring gear divided by the 42 toothed sun gear =1.85:1+1 =
2.85:1
and the
2.17 is a LH turning planetary with ring gear held can't
remember the tooth count.
It doesn't
matter 'what drives what' in the Truck - just count the
teeth.
