Bob, the only advantage I can see to the D585 is the metal heat sink might make it less susceptible to high under the cowl temps. I recall losing my leading ignition coil early on due to the fact that a resistor in its base apparently could not take the continuos high rpm load and heat. But, if no one is having problems with the D581 then probably nothing to be gained.

Subject: [FlyRotary] Connectors for the D581 Coils
Because I've had a request to build a coil cable for the D581, I did
some serious searching to see if I could find the correct connector. I
might have found it, but I'm waiting to receive a sample to see if it's
actually the right one.
After much searching on the web, I found a part number for the cable
that connects 4 coils to a single 7 pin connector. GM p/n 12582189.
This is equivalent to the GM cable used with the D580 coils. I ordered
one of them so that I would have a reference for the connector (see
attached photo).
I believe I've located the connector at the Delphi distributor. I have
a sample on order to see if it truly matches. If it's the right one, I
will be able to build the coil cables for the same price with either
connector specified.
Last week I looked at the connectors on a 2006 Chevrolet Truck at the
local dealer. It uses the same connector.
I also ran across another coil that would probably work. The D585
coil. The only thing is, it costs more, and someone would have to
verify that it is functionally the same, so I don't see any advantage in
using it.
For more pictures and information, I've put a web page at:
