Al,
Your right on the = money,=20 everything you have said is true and slightly different for different = starters.=20 Tracy uses the manual starter as that is what Ross initially did and = it's=20 carried on from there.
For the Aussie = Bellhousing I=20 uses the Turbo starter but have made allowances for=20 both.
The Subaru starter = will also=20 mesh with the Mazda ring gear.
The mounting holes = are all=20 different.
The starter snout = hole doesn't=20 need to totally surround the starter, so you can start from the edge, = cut a bit=20 and check for fit and then take out some = more.

I liked the = optional bolt hole=20 mount, I didn't think of that. As long as it's held firm at the mount=20 holes.
I tried to send a = photo but it=20 didn't work, it bounced because of the = limits.

George ( down=20 under)

I am going to copy your starter mounting system.  It = really makes=20 since for me using a James cowl with the shark intake under the = spinner.  I=20 need the starter moves from the bottom of the engine to the side.  = Do you=20 have any words of wisdom as to how to determine the starter position to = get the=20 correct starter gear to ring gear mesh?

Dennis=20 H.

All = I can recall=20 is doing a lot of very careful measurements.  As you know, you = need the=20 engine shaft center to starter shaft center to be the same as it would = be in=20 the original position.  Be careful because I seem to recall that = I=20 determined that either the starter shaft centerline is not in the = center of=20 the hole in the plate for the =91nose=92 of the starter housing, = and/or that the=20 center of the starter shaft is not exactly on a line connecting the = two=20 starter mounting bolts.

I = measured=20 everything as carefully as possible; then center-punched where the new = hole in=20 the plate needed to be, and had a machinist friend put in the = hole.  I=20 drilled the new hole in the starter mounting flange myself. =  Things lined=20 up very well.  If need be, you can oversize the new mounting hole = a bit=20 so you can adjust the mesh before tightening down the = bolts.

Good=20 luck,

Al
