Rotary Enthusiasts:

I have not had time to keep up with the message traffic on this list in real time. But I did take some time this weekend to search the archives for clues to Paul Conner's accident. I found he made a major mistake in his fuel system. It does not mean this was the cause of the accident, but it's possible. I want to make sure no other Canarders out there do something similar.

Attached are two pictures from the Long-EZ plans. You see the fuel system is a low-wing fuel system, like a Piper. Pipers and other low wing aircraft do not use a L-R-BOTH-OFF fuel selector valve, they only use L-R-OFF. Only high wing Cessna's use the L-R-BOTH-OFF system.

Here is the link to the message where Paul says he uses a L-R-BOTH and normally runs on BOTH. He says he did that on his previous Long-EZ as well, but that also was an error.
Below the link is the original message itself.

Re: [FlyRotary] Re: Vapor Lock
It was a non-return carbureted system, but since my new canard delivers fuel from both tanks into the sump, and the unburned fuel also goes back to the sump tank (not to either of the mains), what would cause the difference?  So far, the fuel level in both of my main tanks have been going down at the same rate.  I add 10 gallons to each tank, and they are still even (as best can be determined by the clear sight fuel gages).   Paul Conner

Was that an EFI with return or a non return carbureted system.  Makes a difference.

Hi, Tracy...I had the same setup on my LongEZ....two strake fuel tanks and a fuel selector valve with left, right and both. 95% of the time, I just used both. Worked fine. Fuel levels in both tanks were always very close to each other.  Paul Conner

I agree, it's a tough call on the Facet pump with the sump tank.  But then if you eliminated the sump tank.......  : )
Your Andair valve is a good (but pricey) solution.   And I see the fuel transfer requirement as no more onerous than the requirement to switch tanks.  This is a cherries & nectarines issue.  Both taste great.

I'll have to think about that "auto leveling" a bit but at first blush, I'm not sure it would work in all situations.  Have you tried it?
