It is hooked up to the yellow wire of the mazda
trailing coil.

How do you have it
hooked up? I’m guessing that you are using the Mazda coils, and getting
the signal from there. I believe Tracy said it would give
you two pulses per rev, which is what a 4 cyl tach would expect.
