I think one of these tachs would work for you guys -

they are available for 2-stroke or 4-stroke.  The signal pickup comes

from wrapping a 'lead' around the number 1 sparkplug wire:

Sounds just perfect for my temporary installation.  Heck, I can tape that baby to the armrest and peel it off when the EM-2 gets here. What a deal.  I probably won't get a chance to try it out for a couple weeks though.
