Dave, I have the sensor mounted in the cover plate where the oil filter originally resided.  The gear box feed is from the same location using a flex line.   I started with an alum line but like the flex better.   Oil temp reads 15-20 degrees lower than coolant in current static tests with the top cowling off.

My current plane is to measure the temp of the oil on its way to the reduction drive.  This is easy to install in the alum line.  Should be about equivalent to measuring the temp at the oil inlet. 

 

Anyone else doing it there?
