Since I'm sending so darn many pics anyways, I figured I'd send some of my air filter and ram air scoop. The scoop is 8" x 3/4" = 6 sq". The filter is a 4"x10" K&N. It seals tightly to the top cowl half, directly below the scoop. I hadn't thought to take a better picture, but the alternate air inlet is on the end (labelled on pic). It is simply a weak spring loaded poppet valve that opens a 1.5" dia hole. If filter ices up, this should give me enough air to produce enough power to maintain alt.
Jim, You hit on the one REAL likely failure mode for a filtered inlet, ICE! All FI certified aircraft are required to have an alternate air source for this reason. All the other possible problems mentioned are somewhat remote.  Icing an air filter is a very real possibility. 2 sources is best.
