Hi Rusty,

It appeared that the backside of one of the ground electrodes of the leading plug in #1 rotor was burnished on the back side - but, could have been I found what I was looking for.  But, there is no way I could screw the sparkplug deep enough (even without the washer) to have the electrode stick into the chamber.  So it appears that the timing of the changing of the plugs and the incident were a coincident.

By the way see my previous message - response from Mazdatrix.  The RX-8 rotors are $270 cheaper than the 9.7:1 rotors - but, you have to get them milled to accept the 13B apex seals.  The Renesis apex seal is not designed to cross the exhaust port.

But, I can now eliminate the spark plugs as well as the plastic plenum.  The end of the spark plug clears the combustion chamber even with the washer removed - and no pieces of the porcelain appear to missing from  the plugs.

Hi Ed,

Glad there wasn't any more damage, but it sure would be nice to know the true cause.  Didn't you mention earlier that one of the plugs showed signs of something hitting it?  If so, how do you explain that?

I'll be interested in hearing the answer to the Renesis rotor installation question.  While they might be cheaper than the 9.7 rotors, don't forget to add the price of new counterweights, and any machine work.

Cheers,
Rusty (new, but "slightly" dented 9.7 rotor for sale)
