But, I can now eliminate the spark plugs as well as the plastic plenum.  The end of the spark plug clears the combustion chamber even with the washer removed - and no pieces of the porcelain appear to missing from  the plugs.

Glad there wasn't any more damage, but it sure would be nice to know the true cause.  Didn't you mention earlier that one of the plugs showed signs of something hitting it?  If so, how do you explain that?  
 
I'll be interested in hearing the answer to the Renesis rotor installation question.  While they might be cheaper than the 9.7 rotors, don't forget to add the price of new counterweights, and any machine work.
