This is kind of a weird topic to me as I can't think of any reason to not
protect the engine with a filter.

I think
everyone would like to have their engine protected by a filter, but not
everyone has room for one, and not everyone thinks it's worth the performance
penalty. I do worry a bit about picking up an odd piece of gravel, or
something hard like that, but I'm not worried about dust and dirt. For the
record, I actually worry more about taking a piece of FOD to the oil cooler
or evap core.
