I wouldn't use WD-40 as a permanent lubrication. It's only good for a
temporary lube and cleaning. It will dry out - and pull oils out of
metal and leave you in a worse mess.
Use a good grease - even Vaseline is fine for cables and will last a
good long while.

On our tractor trailers, we have found that WD-40 is only a temporary cure. It dries out, and the cables REALLY bind afterward. We use either silicone grease or 3-in-1 oil. Regular grease will also dry out. You need the silicone grease. Most auto parts stores sell it. Paul conner
