RE: [FlyRotary] Re: oil return location?
As a follow up to this; I just measured the vertical height of these oil ports. The lower drain port on the RD-1A is 1" lower than the injection oil port. The RD-1A still needs an outlet tube fitting. If you use a 90 degree or a "T" (to connect the upper drain) this will lower it an additional 3/4", so your oil would have to flow uphill 1 3/4". If you use the Turbo oil drain, the bottom of this drain pipe is exactly the same height as the centre of the RD-1A outlet fitting. Still not very attractive, and you still have to route it around the hot exhaust.
I know that Tracy doesn't have any concrete proof that oil shouldn't be returned below the oil level, and logically it shouldn't make a great bit of difference, but I do agree with him here and think it's worth the effort to install a return port above the oil. If there was some performance or economic advantage to experimenting with a lower return port, but I don't see any other than a few hours of time saving.
My earlier comments about attempting to drill & tap in place while removing chips are definitely not to be taken as a reasonable alternative to removing the engine. As Rick pointed out the chips would be very hard to remove, however I should also have suggested that I would also flush the pan several times with oil. I do feel however that any chips would never make it past your filter, although they must go through the oil pump to get there. Still, I am in no way endorsing this, if you have any alternative.
Me, I pulled one of my engine sub-mounts off and pulled the oil pan. I know you really don't want to do it, but it looks like there is little option. I will include a couple of pics of how I did mine.

This is something that should be addressed during a rebuild, so if any listers are still early in their project... PAY ATTENTION -- you will need to return oil from your PSRU no matter which one you buy. (well, except for Perry Mick;-)) (and Ken) Add a drain port and just put a plug or cap on it until it is needed. I'm surprised that Bruce doesn't already do something like this on his engines. Even on his video, in the short section he has on aircraft use, he should add mention of this during any future edition.

Last night I had a quick look at this, and I feel that there is almost no vertical drop between the RD-1A outlets and the injection oil pump fitting.
