Hi, Kelly...My starter wire goes directly to the battery.  The alternator wire goes directly to the plus side of the battery through a fuse.  I was mistaken in concluding that the fuse blew while cranking. You might have missed my earlier post regarding the actual problem. A screw came loose in my rebuilt alternator, chewed up the internal cooling fins, and was imbedded into the field wirings.  Alternator shorted internally, and fortunately, the fuse did what it was supposed to do....it blew and protected the wire and prevented all of my battery voltage from going direct to ground and draining the battery.  Take care, and thanks for your interest/input.  Paul Conner

Paul,
Again I may be late with this reply......(out of town using borrowed computer) !
Are you by any chance pulling starter load through the 70 amp fuse ?? If my
memory does not fail me the battery should be connected directly to the starter
and the 70 amp fuse is wired from alternator output to B+ bus bar (or Battery)
depending on how your electrical system is wired......FWIW
