If you keep the differential, the original joint and cross would get you into

fit into the drive shaft,(another like the first end).
 
 I need to see what I can come up with parts wise (junkyard I guess) butthe
instrumentation end would be interesting.

While my Stuska had a hydraulic diaphragm as a sensor and a 12 or 14 inch
pressure gage,  very nice solid state transducers, like those used in scales are
now available, and would be easy to hook up electronically.
