For me, it's a stock turbo, or nothing.  The price of aftermarket turbos is
exorbitant, and I really don't need the power.  If I can do some normalizing
for dirt cheap, I will, otherwise, I'll skip it.

I still have a lot to learn about turbos, though I am familiar with the
surge limit problem.  My plan is to first see if the thing will even come
close to fitting in my RV-3 cowling area.  If so, then I'll start trying to
find out if it's safe to use.  I don't suppose anyone has a compression map
for the series 5 (89-91) turbo? Eventually, I'm going to have to have one.
