Rusty;  I would highly recommend that you do your experimenting with the
turbo on a dyno or a test bed.   I had the same experiences' as Ed back in
the 60's trying to may a blower work.  After blowing the engine out of my
wifes car four times, she terminated the hole installation and concluded
that I wasn't any smarter than the engineer who designed the installation.
The only positive thing I learned was that you can really get good at
pulling engines in short order.  JohnD
