No special trick that I know, John. However,
from my experience in straightening fins, two tools are invaluable. One is
what looks to be a small pair of pliers with flat nose that you can slip
(gently) between two squashed together fins and by squeezing the handle
straighten a fin. Depending on how mashed together they are, you may need
something that is thin (like a dull blade from a scalpel or wood carving tool)
but not too sharp as those fins will seem to have melted together. Get a
separation started with the blade and then slip in the nose of the pliers.
You may be able to get that tool at some of the
larger auto stores.
The other tool which is great when you just need
some minor fin alignment {:>) looks like a four sided plastic comb on a
handle. The different teeth spacing meant for different fin spacing so
make certain you use the correct one. But, I don't find this one that
useful when a bunch of fins are bashed together as you can not get the
teeth between the fins.
Those tools and lots of patience are
needed.
Just a thought, you might contact some local
radiator shop and see if they have a kid that they might employ just to
straighten fins and have him do it.

Nah. I don't think so. He'd have to be a very neat
hangar bum.... or a hangar bum with a hose pipe.
I think the hangar bum was probably me.
:(
Anyone have any special tricks for bending oil cooler
fins while lying on your back with your arms up a NACA
scoop?
