Starving boy solution A:

Back the rachet out just far enough to engage the
plug's hex, but not far enough to loose grip on the
socket. (Yes, I've done this one)

Starving boy solution B:

Stick the socket on, grab it with a pair of
vice-grips. (Yes, I've done this one)

Starving boy solution C:

Weld a piece of scrap to a cheap socket. (No, this
one's way to expensive for my taste. 8*)
