The 37 deg flare is suppose to put less stress on the flare than a 45 deg
flare - whether that is really the reason - I have not a clue as to why 37
is preferred for aircraft.

the story I heard was that during the war there was problems with counterfeit fittings, so the US switched to 37 degrees.  other nations didn't.  I have been told the is no difference in performance.
