What does Tracy recommend as far as the re-drive goes.  Seems there is a good middle ground here someplace.

I’m assuming you are talking about the redrive lubrication? All I know is that whatever is in the oil pan :).
I just replaced a transmission on Japanese Yanmar diesel and the recommended oil was 30W HD
