Have you considered an intake at the base of the windscreen/cowling interface, might be able to be essentially flush and take advantage of the high pressure there. All cars use this location to provide cabin air, and it seems to work well.

Yeah I did, but to get to where the base of the canopy is, I think I'd have to put the scoop in the front skin, which means penetrating the firewall with a big duct.  That sort of ruled it out for me.  Thanks for the thought though.
