Oh, I also meant to say:

I did a 3D drawing of the mount I'm planning.  I
downloaded a demoware of a program that is supposed
to do FEA analysis.  I believe the name of the
company is MSC.  It loaded the model just fine, and
after a few hours and a couple of false starts the
analysis began.  A few minutes later the thing
bluescreened.

...gotta love Windows XP.

I think the design I have will be good to 10g (using
Paul Lamar's graphical method), but I'll post a VRML
model to see what others think.

Hi Dennis,

If you want to build your own motor mount I would suggest starting with Van's conical mount.  David Carter's suggestion of ordering from the manufacturer is an even better idea.  You will have to cut off all the motor mount tubes anyway so order the landing gear without the motor mount tubes will also save a few dollars.  Attached is a picture of my RV-4 mount which started out as a Van's RV-4 Conical mount.  Needless to say, I've got to become proficient enough in fiberglass to build my own cowling (I HATE fibeglass!!!).
